what about Worship...

Here is a new post to start a discussion on "Worship" in the Christian context. Amber had started this discussion in a previous post, but I thought we should have a separate post on it.
The question was: What types of Worship help you connect with God the most? I.e. Art, music, spending time outdoors, prayer, reading your Bible, writing, or anything else.
I would also add to that thought - What holds you back from Worshipping in a service? [if anything]
So Go Ahead, Blog Away...punk...

Haha, I messed up my last comment so i deleted it. anyways...
I'd say that for me, what really helps me connect with God would be music. Either just listening to it by myself, or listening to live bands play at events like Gibsons, etc. Also I really like being outdoors and just seeing nature and everything, it makes me feel really peaceful.
As for something holding me back from worship, what usually happens for me that would do that is that I just get distracted and start thinking about other things. Like, school, personal problems..anything. My mind wanders a lot (if you haven't noticed) so it's just hard for me sometimes to stay connected.
Very cool, thanks for the honesty
worshiping in a service...so controversial...even the terminology...it can be hard to "worship" in a church. sometimes the lyrics in the songs we praise God with aren't scripturally truthful or they express emotional things without integrity...words that no one could ever actually carry out in life...they say things about God that aren't necessarily true...we sing words in church emotively that we may mean in one way but the bible clearly lays out another way...and it feels wrong to sing them...other times i feel like a hypocrite singing at all...even if the words in the song are good and true, i don't always mean the words i sing...you know? where do you draw the line? do you sing just because everyone else is? shouldn't we sing only when we mean it?
isn't worship a lifestyle thing, not expressed in arts and leisure alone, but shown in our daily lives, in the way we talk with people and in the way we act, and even think? is it not true that worship really has nothing to do with music, but we are so used to having church that we have made it that way? i wonder if i'm not all alone in this struggle...and i'm interested to see what you have to say...
Great comment "anonymous"
I would love to comment to this and I surely will. But I would also add that this is a a safe enviornment and I as the moderator of this blog have asked people commenting to identify themselves, and would appreciate names being attached to comments.
I think we in this world to often want to be anonymous when sometimes we need to have the strength to own our thoughts and put our name to them. It is safe here.
Just so everyone knows - slamming or blasting peoples ideas and thoughts are not tolerated - these comments will be promptly deleted.
Thanks,
Pastor Jaz :)
Worship...in my university studies we often discussed the misappropriation of the word with regards to "what we do" in our churches. Fact is, our lame-o selves are not capable of coming up with the wunderbar idea of getting together and worshipping God. Worship is not what we do. Worship is about God. What He does, has done, will do. We get pretty caught up in "are we doing worship the right way?" and berating ourselves for not feelin' it in worship or for our minds wandering. Not sure about you guys out there, but not every pastor I've encountered has been the most moving and encapsulating speaker, know what I mean? We're human. We're flawed, don't I know it. When we aren't feeling worshipful, when our minds or hearts are wandering, when we have our limited tunnel vision of what we think God should be doing, does that mean God has changed? I think not. Imagine where some of us would be if God changed with the fickle tides of OUR hearts.
Worship...being in God's presence...acknowledging Him for who He is...asking His Spirit to speak to and fill us...acknowledging our need for Him even in our imperfection. After this many years of life, I can attest to the continuity of God (and the oscillation of myself).
And hey Jaz, sorry for the anonymity but there's enough junk on our computer without adding blogger. :)
i often hear the phrase "Worship is a lifestyle". Sure in church you worship in music, some may paint, others take a walk in nature.. but this could also mean to simply mean to live a life of love. To love extravagantly. The first commandment, to LOVE the Lord your God with ALL your heart, with ALL your soul, and with your entire mind, means exactly that. You make a heart and mind decision to seek first the God, and to OBEY the Spirit of God in your life, as He calls you on to a greater and deeper knowledge of Himself.
I belive Worship requires something of you, and that is OBEDIENCE, but worship doesnt have to be singing, or praying,.. or all the other things that may come to mind... but jsut the way you think, the way you act,... i believe worship comes up in many different forms every day.
hey anonymous - you just need to click on "other" and type in your name - you don't need to set up a blogger account - simple as that. ;)
NO BOUNDARIES is coming Friday the 17th of November - be there - it is an opportunity to worship God with music and singing....woot woot
you will just have to come and find out ;)
music has a lot to do with worship. of course, it is not all that worship is... but it can definitely a part of it.....
you see... worship is just a broad term....... we just gotta be careful of reductionism
see ya l8r alligators
